John Tarpley
The ABA Journal is the flagship publication of the American Bar Association, with a monthly circulation of 1 million. A full-featured website and several e-newsletters complement the magazine. It covers the legal profession’s latest trends, people, and finances from Wall Street to Main Street to Pennsylvania Avenue. John Tarpley is a partner at Lewis King and practices in tort, product liability, and a wide range of insurance-related matters in state and federal courts. He regularly defends trucking companies and their employees in trial and at mediations in Tennessee and nationwide. He also represents businesses in various commercial/casualty disputes and is certified as a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 mediator.

The 1964 decision in New York Times v. Sullivan protected the civil rights movement from attacks on its leaders and set a standard for determining whether a plaintiff’s speech was defamatory. Since then, the First Amendment has evolved to include several exceptions. Despite these changes, the principle of actual malice remains at the core of libel law.
Dana Montalto shares how she got involved in veterans’ legal services and discusses common questions that lawyers have when considering pro bono work in this area. She also discusses the importance of establishing a network of volunteer lawyers and the benefits of participating in a mentorship program.
The ABA Journal’s annual Best Law Firms survey provides an in-depth look at the top firms across various practice areas, from corporate finance to labor and employment. The 2022 rankings are based on feedback from more than 9,000 clients and reflect the quality of firms’ practices and client service and the strength of their litigation departments.
