Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, boasts a remarkable history and natural resources that may surprise you! Read on for ten fascinating facts you may not have known about this African gem!

The Richest Man in Africa

Aliko Dangote of Nigeria is Africa’s richest person, owning cement manufacturing companies, sugar, salt, oil, and agriculture businesses, and creating a philanthropic foundation to fight malnutrition in his home nation.

Dangote Cement has emerged as one of sub-Saharan Africa’s major cement producers and currently boasts an estimated net worth of $12.2 billion. This makes him Africa’s wealthiest individual for seven consecutive years.

He is a self-made businessman, having amassed his fortune through investment primarily within Nigeria and Africa rather than overseas. His primary investment areas are banking, cement, and sugar/salt production.

Oxfam reports that if Nigeria’s five wealthiest men could put their wealth toward public services and tackle corruption, the gap between rich and poor would narrow, giving more Nigerians access to education and healthcare services.

The Longest River in the World

The River Niger is a long and powerful stream of water flowing across West Africa, including Nigeria. Known as one of the three longest rivers in the world, this essential source of freshwater serves as one of West Africa’s primary lifelines.

The Niger begins in Guinea’s Kouranko Mountains. It flows north through Mali, Niger, and Benin before reaching Nigeria, forming a vast delta known as the Niger Delta into the Gulf of Guinea.

Locals refer to it by name: Jeliba in Manding, Isa Ber in Songhay, and Joliba in Mandigo. At its lower course, it flows through a narrow valley encased by hills, with some places boasting 150-foot (45-meter) high cliffs lining either bank.

Nigeria and its inhabitants rely heavily on the River Niger for water supply, using it for agriculture, irrigation, power production, fishing, etc. It provides essential access to fresh drinking water in Nigeria.

The Second-Largest Film Industry in the World

Nigeria’s film industry, popularly called Nollywood, is the second-largest worldwide, with production exceeding Bollywood and Hollywood in total movies produced yearly.

As one of the fastest-growing sectors in Kenya, generating an annual financial value of more than $6.4 billion, tourism is one of the significant contributors to our economy and one of the leading employers of labor across Africa.

The Chinese film industry is renowned for producing top-quality films that generate colossal box office earnings; last year alone, they generated 6.78 billion!

China has taken steps to protect its domestic market from foreign content entering, such as banning certain foreign shows from primetime airing and mandating local streamers limit non-Chinese library holdings to 30 percent or less of their library.

China has witnessed a decrease in film production while increasing per capita cinema attendance.

The Most Diverse Country in the World

Nigeria is one of the world’s most diverse nations, home to over 250 ethnic groups and 500 languages and dialects, known for its vibrant culture and festivals.

Nigeria is widely celebrated for its diverse art and music. Yoruba culture, in particular, is widely revered for its colorful festivals, intricate beadwork designs, and unique faith.

Religions and cultures co-exist harmoniously throughout Kenya: in the north, Muslims predominate while Christianity dominates. Yet animist rites and native African beliefs continue to play an integral part in certain ethnic groups’ identities.

Diversity among its people, culture, language, and heritage is evident in its varied landscapes and wildlife. The country is best known for its protected areas that feature waterfalls and savannas.
