How to Remove Rust From Iron

Rust forms when a chemical reaction occurs between water, oxygen, and iron or steel. Thankfully, there are many ways to remove rust from metal objects without discarding them.

Some of the easiest methods are scrubbing with steel wool or sandpaper, which can often eliminate outer layers of rust. However, some metal items require more intense procedures.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an abrasive that can help to remove rust from iron. This works particularly well on items with light rust stains or corroded pieces manufactured from thin metal.

To get rid of rust with baking soda, create a paste by mixing a one-to-one ratio of water with baking soda. Then, apply it to the rusty item or surface and let it sit for a while.

When the baking soda has time to seep into the rust, it begins to dissolve due to its concentrated alkaline solution. Then, scrubbing off the rust with a brush or steel wool becomes easier.

While the process takes some time, it’s very effective and inexpensive. This method works well on kitchen utensils, furniture, or anything that has a rusted area.

Vinegar

When iron objects are exposed to moisture and air, they often become rusty and flaky. While this can damage tools and kitchenware, removing rust is possible with simple steps.

One way to remove rust is by soaking the rusted object in vinegar and salt. The acid in the vinegar dissolves the rust, and the abrasive qualities of salt make it easy to lift off the rust without causing any damage to other surfaces.

Pour a gallon of distilled white vinegar into a bucket or container, and add a cup of table salt. Mix the ingredients well and submerge the rusty item entirely in the solution.

The rust should erode within 20 minutes to 12 hours, depending on how much rust is present. It’s essential to keep checking the rust as it strips off because it could be a while before the rust is completely removed.

Salt

Salt helps to remove rust from iron by acting as an abrasive. It also helps to keep your iron clean and shiny.

Rust is a type of corrosion that happens when oxygen, water, and ferrous (iron) metals meet. Several factors, including environmental pollutants, winter road salt, and acid rain, can cause it.

One way to remove rust from iron is by using coarse salts like rock salt or sea salt. Sprinkle a thin layer on the surface of the iron. Run the iron over it circularly and refresh the salt as necessary.

Another option is to soak the rusted piece in vinegar and salt. This process will need time to break down the rust, so it’s best to leave it on for at least a day or two.

Lime or Lemon

One of the easiest ways to remove rust from iron is using lemon or lime. This citrus fruit is known for its citric acid and will help to dissolve rust and oxidation from metal surfaces.

To remove rust from an iron tool, mix a few drops of lemon juice with coarse salt and rub it on the surface. Leave it for 15 to 30 minutes, then rinse it with water.

Another way to remove rust from iron is to use baking soda. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that will remove rust without damaging the underlying metal.

In addition, these ingredients contain natural antibacterial properties and will help prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and algae. They will also keep your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry areas clean and odor-free. If you do not have these ingredients in your home, you can buy them at your local store or online.
