He played at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, before attending the University of Oregon to study both football and track. Now full-time coaching at Bend High School, where he coaches both offensive and defensive lines while specializing in tackling and pass defense – plus his wife Kara shares Genevieve!

Heflin has been coaching girls’ tennis at Lone Oak for four decades, and during that time, the program has won 11 state championships and several runner-up finishes. He attributes their success to both their students’ hard work and community support. He was even named one of 22 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations, along with numerous awards recognizing his teaching achievements and coaching techniques.
Heflin attended Westminster High School in Rolla, Missouri, as a football linebacker on their Blue Jay football team and credits that experience for shaping him into an exceptional teacher and coach. Though Heflin often misses playing on the field himself, he takes immense satisfaction in mentoring others through teaching and coaching.
Edgewood’s season has been disrupted by news that they have used an ineligible player. While Edgewood filed an appeal, there is no certainty as to whether their decision will be reversed, and regardless, their undefeated record will likely be dismantled this weekend.
Nick Heflin was an intimidating wrestler himself and has used that same ferocity to lead his teams to success. His knowledge of body conditioning is passed along to his athletes, and his motivational tactics often send his teams directly to NCAA wrestling championships.
Heflin was an avid family man, enjoying spending time with his wife and children as well as golfing and basketball with friends. Kelly Heflin encouraged people to remember him fondly.

He taught his players to be responsible and reliable members of society. With an impressive graduation rate and assistance in finding jobs after they graduated, Senior Day became a unique celebration of all their accomplishments. They developed close bonds with him, even receiving scholarships to pay for school.
Coach Smith led North Carolina to four NCAA titles during the peak of his career as head coach at Chapel Hill and was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983. Under his tutelage were Kenny Cunningham (Hall of Famer), Michael Jordan (Future Hall of Famer), and NBA superstars James Worthy and Bob McAdoo, who all found their way under Coach Smith’s tutelage.
Smith was strongly influenced by Bill Edwards of Vanderbilt and Western Reserve in terms of coaching style. He uses straightforward language and techniques to explain complex concepts quickly and assess his players’ understanding quickly, never forcing his players to memorize playbooks but encouraging them instead to grasp the fundamentals and then use their abilities to progress as athletes.
As Illinois’ new head coach, he brought with him his coaching philosophy and techniques from high school coaching experience in football and basketball, plus extensive recruiting expertise at both levels of education.
Coach Smith has enjoyed tremendous success with the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball program, winning three state titles and one national championship during his tenure. Furthermore, he was honored as the 2017 NCAA Division I men’s basketball Coach of the Year.
Assistant football coaches play an invaluable role in the development of players on a football team, fostering school pride, encouraging student participation in athletic activities, and working closely with both the Head coach and Director of Extracurricular Activities to ensure all participants are treated fairly. Both sides are using all available resources in their practices in order to give themselves the most excellent chance at victory.
Coach True recently resigned as head football coach of Edgewood High School due to recent events. He explained that his passion had diminished over time and was no longer able to devote the necessary energy towards this job; additionally, there had been distractions outside of football itself, which prevented him from providing adequate coaching duties.
Heflin graduated from Edgewood in 1989 and currently holds a master’s degree from Wright State University. For 21 years, he taught and coached at Edgewood, coaching various sports as an intervention specialist and living in Trenton with his wife and two sons.
Michael came to Edgewood from Howard Payne University, where he served as defensive backs coach from 2018-2021. During this time, he developed five All-District linebackers while helping win a district title with the Pirates. Michael has experience coaching baseball and basketball.
Track and field is open to girls and boys in fifth through eighth grades, with practices held after school on the Edgewood High School track, followed by participation in local meets during each season – boys from late March through May while girls take place September to October; students can compete both at Edgewood Invitational Meet as well as local competitions.
