Former Toronto Maple Leafs star Börje Salming has died on the age of 71, the crew has confirmed.
In an announcement Thursday, Toronto Maple Leafs president and alternate governor Brendan Shanahan stated the group is mourning the lack of Salming.
“Börje was a pioneer of the sport and an icon with an unbreakable spirit and unquestioned toughness,” Shanahan stated within the assertion. “He helped open the door for Europeans within the NHL and outlined himself by way of his play on the ice and thru his contributions to the group.”

Shanahan stated Salming joined the crew 50 years in the past, including that he’ll “endlessly be part of our hockey household.”
“We lengthen our deepest condolences to his spouse, Pia, his youngsters Theresa, Anders, Rasmus, Bianca, Lisa and Sarah and brother Stieg,” he stated.
Salming signed with the Leafs as a free agent forward of the 1973-74 season and spent 16 seasons with the crew.
