James McAvoy is opening up about his refusal to marketing campaign to win an Oscar which led to him not scoring a nod for his work on Atonement (2007).
In an interview with British GQ, McAvoy stated that he noticed first-hand what it took for Forest Whitaker to land his main actor Oscar for his work on The Final King of Scotland, a movie each actors starred in. McAvoy was seemingly not overjoyed with the way in which actors need to cozy as much as members of the Academy to get a nod or a vote to win.
“[With the Last King of Scotland campaign], it was made clear to me that I used to be doing it for the good thing about different folks. And I used to be completely down with that,” he informed the publication. “However by the point Atonement got here alongside, I used to be 26 or 27, and I used to be identical to, I can’t do it, I’m not doing it, I don’t wanna do it.”
Atonement went on to obtain 7 nominations on the Oscars together with Finest Image and Finest Supporting Actress for Saoirse Ronan. The movie directed by Joe Wright took a trophy for Finest Unique Rating that went to Dario Marianelli.
“I didn’t wish to play that half. I’ll push the movie, I’ll attempt to get bums on seats. However the marketing campaign, I felt… I felt low-cost,” he added.
McAvoy has a 27-year-long profession and says that he now solely seems to be for “attention-grabbing experiences.”
“I like doing it, however I don’t love the day by day grind of the movie and telly enterprise,” he defined. “Even when it’s an excellent script, I actually can’t rationalise going to work at 5 or 6 within the morning and staying out until eight o’clock at evening. If my character hasn’t obtained an attention-grabbing half in telling that story it’s fairly soul destroying.”
